The data is indexed and stored in a media database and then sent to a backup storage device (usually a tape). The backup server also facilitates future data recovery. Backup Client +++ The backup client is any computer on which backup software installed that allows the backup server to back up its data. A backup client does not have to be the same platform or operating system as the backup server. Storage Node +++ A storage node is a computer connected to one or more storage devices, such as tape libraries and tape drives, that are used in backup and recovery operations. The backup server (or multiple backup servers) controls the storage node. Catalog +++ Backup catalogs are databases that reside on the backup server that track the files that backed up from the backup clients. In addition, catalogs track the volume on which the data resides as well as the date and time the files were backed up. Data Set +++ The data set is typically the set of files or file systems that are backed up from a backup client to a backup server (or backup storage node). Media Duplication +++ Backup servers can make duplicates, or clones, of complete volumes of stored data as well as individual data sets. This allows for secure offsite storage, easy transfer of data from one location to another and verification of backups. Staging +++ The staging process captures files or directories, as they exist at a specific time, and writes the data to special staging storage volumes. After the staging process completes, you can delete (groom) the original files from the disk to conserve space. Database Agent +++ Database agents are software installed on backup clients that contain databases to be backed up such as Oracle, Sybase, MS-Exchange, MS-SQL, Informix, etc. The database agents allow hot backups of the various databases previously mentioned thus preventing the databases to be shutdown prior to the backups of the databases occurring.
